El Jefe, 2003. 279 pages, over 100 black & white pictures
This book provides an extraordinary insight into a lost Penitente world. It is based on New Mexico family journals, Penitente interviews, and personal experiences that detail their rituals, and their lives which are dedicated to their Church, Brothers, and families. The writings are enhanced by several illustrations and photos, some dating back to the early 1900’s. They depict the Penitente rites, processions, garb, instruments, and their moradas, a place of gathering and worship. Lenten meal and recipes are included in this book.

Ruben E. Archuleta, Pueblo’s retired police chief, has compiled a remarkable collection of material about Penitentes in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. His publication differs from existing books and articles on this subject because it contains numerous documents and personal interviews rather than a formal history of the Fraternidad de Nuestro Padre Jesus de Nazareno. -- Valley News
A must book for all households is a new book by former Pueblo police chief, Ruben Archuleta titled Land of the Penitentes, Land of Tradition. Over 200 pages, with pictures and names. Perhaps someone you know. -- Hispania News
Colorado Attorney General Ken Salazar took a break from the state business Friday to help former Police Chief Ruben Archuleta preview the chief’s new book about the Penitentes. Their rumored activities are legend in Southern Colorado but the real story of the secretive Penitentes - a religious fraternity for Spanish-speaking Hispanic men – isn’t so dramatic, Archuleta’s new book maintains. -- The Pueblo Chieftain
The author was given unprecedented access and has a number of his own photos in the book. There is a useful bibliography and glossary. This book may change your mind about the Penitentes and may quell some of the rumors. -- Tradicion Revista

With their nest emptied and retirement behind them, Margaret and Howard Tessler sold their home, moved into a thirty-foot travel trailer, and set out to tour the country. A tale of murder, a lost gold mine, and a lone woman’s compelling secret, Listen to the Mockingbird, combines the real with the fictional against a backdrop of the Civil War in the Territory of New Mexico.
Matty Summerhayes is headstrong, capable, and confident she can develop a horse ranch, even in harsh conditions of 1860’s New Mexico. But a stranger comes to live in a cave on her land, another is gunned down in the night, and in his pocket she finds a yellowed bit of foolscap covered with baffling markings. Then Texans invade her valley for the Confederacy, and soon disaster is stalking her.
REVIEWS
Occasionally one of the thousands of books published each year just grabs the reader and won’t let go. This is one of those rare finds... This novel set in southern New Mexico during the Civil War is entertaining, informative, and beautifully written.... Matilda “Matty” Summerhayes narrates, coaxes, amazes and thoroughly captures her audience as she strives for some kind of freedom as a single female in a military society heavily weighted toward the rights of men.... Be prepared to forget meals and stay up all night when you start reading this book. Matty’s word-pictures and unorthodox civil disobedience will hold your attention until the last page. -- Betty Parker, Southwest Bookviews
The pages turn themselves and the reader is unable to stop them... well written, researched, and edited.... -- Evelyn Muegge, All About Murder

We marveled at the discovery process and knew people would love to read the letters. Everyone wants to know more about Georgia. This book highlights 678 letters between Chabot and Georgia and Stieglitz while Chabot was writing during the WPA. Some of the letters are about rather mundane things like the flowers/shrubs, fixing pipes, building a house, camping trips, and house maintenance. Others are deeply profound and are about things we want to know about like the Penitente Brothers and the Abiquiu moradas. The photos are wonderful glimpses — many by Chabot herself. Let Abe Peña transport you to a Hispanic New Mexico village. There in San Mateo and in the nearby town of Grants, he introduces us to relatives and friends from his youth on his family’s sheep ranch. His stories of their lives and experiences between the 1920s and the 1950s speak to such universal themes as coming of age, striking out on one’s own, and joining family and neighbors to celebrate good times and to aid them in overcoming hardships.
Though San Mateo was a remote village, its residents were a remarkable cross-section of humanity. We meet Lebanese immigrant children who grew up primarily speaking Spanish and who proudly exclaimed “Yo soy mexicano, casi” (I’m Hispanic, almost). When a religious procession done in hopes of bringing rain results instead in hail, the villagers organize a second procession and parade their patron saint to show him “the mess he made.” And an aged Navajo, in allowing cattle to be driven across his land, asks only that they go by his hogan’s door so he can hear and smell them.
Abe Peña ran the family ranch for many years before serving twelve years in Latin America in various foreign service positions.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Abe Peña writes about the people of San Mateo and other nearby places from the 1920s to 1950s. Pena, who lives in Grants, grew up on a sheep ranch near San Mateo, immersed in the traditional Hispanic culture of west-central New Mexico. He ran the family ranch for many years before serving 12 years in Latin America in foreign service positions. Pena writes about traditional events such as Los Pastores, the shepherds’ pageant performed at Christmas time. He remembers Spanish-speaking Lebanese immigrant children who proudly proclaimed, “Yo soy Mexicano, casi” (I’m Hispanic, almost). He tells of villagers who in a drought paraded a statue of their patron saint in hopes of rain. When hail fell instead, they took him out of the church again to show him “the mess he made.”
“Peña has a good ear for a story,” says historian Marc Simmons, who wrote the book’s introduction. “The engaging men and women who walk so freely through his pages seemed infused with the elixir of southwestern air and landscape and with the tonic of their own vibrant cultural history.”

Anyone who decides to look into “the magickal life styles” quickly finds that there are many highly specialized books, dealing with one or two topics. Few of them are willing to examine—or even admit—that other systems exist & are valid. Merlyn’s Magick is invaluable for someone who is learning the ways of magick, or even who is just a little curious. Joshua Free encourages synthesis and a generalist knowledge of magick, rather than endless specialization or dry academic posturing. Martha Egan’s Milagros: Votive Offerings from the Americas is the classic work on milagros. These metallic miniatures of body parts, plants and animals are traditionally given to favorite saints throughout Latin America in thanks for a milagro, a miraculous healing. This is a custom that dates to the pre-Christian era in the Mediterranean and arrived in the New World with Iberian colonizers. A lavishly illustrated, bilingual English-Spanish edition, Milagros is a study of a fascinating folk tradition.
REVIEWS
This exquisite little book offers a brief history of milagros, Latin American religious offerings cum folk art. Establishing their connection to votive objects worldwide in pre-Christian times, then tracing their association with Catholic saints, Egan laments both the scant documentation of their earlier use and their recent decline as religious objects. The complete text is given in both English and Spanish, and printed on heavy colored stock. Most pleasing are the color and black-and- white photos, presenting not only the diversity of Latin American milagros but also their precursors and corollaries from around the world. Considering the growing availability of milagros in the United States, this book is recommended wherever there is patron interest in Southwestern/Latin American folk art. -- Eric Bryant, Library Journal
Although Latin American folk art has received considerable attention in recent years, this is the first book on the popular collectible milagros, and it is a welcomed delight. . . With sixteen color, fifty black and white photographs and numerous line illustrations, both common and rare or unusual milagros are beautifully presented in historical and contemporary forms. . . This bilingual trade edition fills a gap in our understanding of these popular devotional items. -- Anne L. Ross, Ornament

If you're ready to discover your full potential this book gives you the instant wake-up tools. -- Mark Victor Hansen
WOW. A book that takes the power of conscious creating to the next level. With Boothby's simple, four step process, I've created an incredible life including a magnificent relationship, a beautiful home, and lots of international travel, just to cite a few things.
We live in a world where we want it all and we want it now. Mind Power transcends the immediacy and takes you to a place of knowing that you can create the life you desire. This is no miracle process; patience is a virtue, as it is in all aspects of life. I discovered that step four is the most profound - let it go. I've made so many decisions, using the simple Mind Power formula, and let them go to the extent that I've forgotten I even made those decisions, only to watch them manifest at the appropriate time.
Once, for example, during a seminar with Ms. Boothby, I decided to have a new Jaguar (the car, not a pet). Following the four steps, I then let it go; totally forgotten. Less than two weeks later I was driving my new Jaguar, when someone reminded me that I had indeed made that decision.
If you are really ready to take charge of your own life, be responsible for who you are, and create your life according to your design, you must read this book. -- Richard
Mind Power is a succinct testament to an old African maxim: A bird flies with only that which it has swallowed. Anyone who wishes to succeed in life ought to read this brilliant book. I did and I have been telling everyone I care about to do likewise. The butterfly anecdote on pages 30-31 is one of my many favorites in this easy to read and practical book. After reading Mind Power, the only question one is liable to ask is not 'can I?' but 'how high?' Yes, Mind Power imbibed me with the requisite hitherto unknown self-knowledge and assurance that I need to fly as high as I possibly wish. Great book by an incredible author. A must read for all. -- Debo Kotun
This is a book that makes a terrific gift as it has a lot of personal exercises that, once completed, help a person visualize their goals and realize sub-conscious patterns that may keep them from reaching their goals. The exercises are easy and, best of all, short - each one is only about five minutes. To top it off, the methods really work. I decided to try Boothby's decision-making method to get a new car when I couldn't afford to purchase one. I made the decision per the author's method and, as if by magic, the new car arrived three hours later without my asking anyone for it or paying anything for it! This story is true and, since the first time I read it, I have given this book to several people, my own copy is always on loan and I continue use the author's methods to achieve my goals. By using Boothby's very simple methods I changed the way I verbalize my desires and, in large part to Boothby's book, I have changed my financial status, my health and my personal happiness by 100%. I have read copious books about self-improvement and setting goals but nothing seemed to "work" even though I understood the concepts presented by various authors, channels, psychologists and doctors. I recommend this book to readers everywhere who are trying to improve the quality of their life but just can't seem to get over the hump. It's simple and really works! -- Melodee

Miriam’s Healing is a must read. With Cindy's careful research and potent creativity, Miriam has become as real to me as Jacob and Moses have always been. And, Cynthia is full of surprises! This book is a treasure. Not only will you enjoy it, you will grow spiritually in ways you cannot yet even imagine -- The Rev. Rhonda McIntire, Diocese of San Diego
Miriam’s story is the story of each one of us. All of us have been broken, be it by abuse or betrayal or mockery or isolation. God is with each of us in our scars to heal and help us become the person we are meant to be. We have to acknowledge that we are not whole before we can begin to be holy. -- Ann Edenfield, WINGS Ministry

Watch out world! A new author of note is emerging. Connie Gotsch uses her experience in the world of broadcasting to color a story about a woman who must learn a new way to fight repression if she is to carve a new world for herself. -- Carolyn Howard-Johnson, author of THE FRUGAL BOOK PROMOTER: HOW TO DO WHAT YOUR PUBLISHER WON'T
I liked "A Mouth Full Of Shell" because of the interesting characters of Betsy and Todd. The author did a good job of portraying the members of the community and the members of the faculty. This is a good look at the lives of some small communities that are run by descendants of the founders. -- Scribe and Quill.com
"A Mouth Full Of Shell" is filled with vivid imagery and enticing characters that will keep the reader turning pages. If this novel is anything to go by, Connie Gotsch is an author to keep your eye on. -- Lori Soard, reviewer for Word Museum
“A Mouth Full of Shell” will grip the reader from the first line and carry along on a worrisome ride to the final paragraph as we grapple with the unfairness often facing Betsy. It is not a book for everyone, those who do not care for a feminist viewpoint, or think that ‘good old boy rule’ is best will not care for the work. Discerning readers who do enjoy a well wrought tale filled with a bit of social message, nicely crafted settings and characters, vibrant dialogue at times hard hitting and gritty and a strong woman who does win in the end will find the book to their taste. -- AuthorsDen.com

MYTH AND MORTALITY relates the author's field of expertise, that is, mythology, to the field of Death and Dying. Years of counseling the sick and dying, and years of searching with students for answers to life's big questions, have helped him with this task.
The actual work of preparing this book was triggered by the way Willson's parents died: his mother suddenly and easily, doing her self-appointed task which was caring for her ailing husband, and his father slowly and miserably, not believing in the end what he had so assiduously taught others all his life. "His mythology let him down," Willson says. The first twenty-six pages of the book tell that dramatic story -- "Two Deaths One Summer."
Then follow essays entitled, "The Denial of Death," "Our Aging Population," and "We Need a Mythology." The last one introduces the main body of the book, which works through thirty-two different beliefs or metaphors dealing with death, and gives frank evaluations of how helpful they may be for persons confronting death. They are arranged according to the source of the myths under analysis.
Willson deals first with Stories from Infantile Wishing. Then he proceeds to stories from Contemporary Media, from Socio-Political Movements and from Practical Observation. His most striking innovation is the distinction between Stories from Religion, which are designed to preserve Ego, and Stories from Philosophy, which enable us to transcend Ego.
The book ends with an essay, "Whose Task Is This?" in which the author challenges each reader to be in some way ready to be responsible for his or her own departure. Ego is the problem.
Reviews
Warning: This book may cause episodes of serious thinking to occur in some readers, especially those over the age of fifty. It could also cause strong re-evaluation of readers' religious understandings, especially in persons who have not allowed themselves to think about and question the stories from childhood and Sunday School. Harry Willson moves through life thinking, searching and asking the questions we all would ask, if we were brave enough. Searching has produced some answers, which, thankfully, he shares with us in MYTH AND MORTALITY. However, he does not impose those answers on us, because he knows that all of us who give serious thought to these questions will move forward in our own search."-- Shirley Little, Humanist Society of New Mexico
Charles Dudley Warner, nineteenth century author and sometime editor of Harper's Magazine, said, 'Everybody talks about the weather but nobody does anything about it.' With death we have the reverse: everybody does it but nobody talks about it. Harry breaks this silence. He examines death from many angles, assesses the myths surrounding it, and helps his readers think about the subject without fear. He catches and holds interest by stories, including poingant accounts of the deaths of his parents. He gently persuades us that mortality is real; expecting to pass through death to another life is a vain delusion. In doing this, however, he reinforces the truth of a line in Sunday Morning by Wallace Stevens: 'Death is the mother of beauty.' The fact that our lives come to an end compels us to savor with relish the beauty and good that we experience: flowers, birdsong, starry sky, graphic art, music, love.-- Hershey Julien, Ph.D., U.S. representative of Sea of Faith
This book is provocative reading for anyone who is dealing with death or will face death one day, that is, ALL OF US. Harry Willson examines his personal intense familial experience with death and then proceeds to examine all the myths prevalent in our society that deal with death. Though he has a definite point of view, he does not proselytize. He enables readers to do their own soul-searching. He ends with the notion that each of us can be somewhat responsible for our own exit from the world.-- Rhoda Karp, Hospice social worker, retired
Willson's book takes us from his raw, poignantly emotional experience of the death and dying of his parents to an examination of the universal myths that mankind has created since time immemorial to deal with this experience. I laughed out loud and cried while reading his book, and I recommend it as a thoughtful guide to all of us who will not escape this journey.-- Ruth E. Francis, NM Book Association and NM Book Co-op
A thoughtful, powerful, and moving examination of attitudes toward death. Harry Willson uses his own experiences, currently popular beliefs, and mythologies from various cultures to view the subject from many angles. A former scientist and minister, now a humanist, editor, and author, he brings a well-rounded perspective to the subject. Highly recommended to anyone wrestling with the issue of mortality.-- Jon Nimitz, Ph.D., Compassion and Choices, New Mexico Chapter
