ABOUT A DOZENS SLOTS LEFT FOR LAVENDER IN THE VILLAGE BOOK
EVENT
Last year, Lavender in the Village brought thousands of
people to the Village of Los Ranchos. It was a two day
event and because it was such a great opportunity last year
for book and authors, the New Mexico Book Co-op is opening
the event up to authors from the village. This year’s
Lavender festival is set for July 11- 13. LPD Press and the
New Mexico Book Co-op, both located in Los Ranchos, are
organizing a couple of booths that will cater to local
authors who want to sell their books. There are also spaces
for signings. Join in the fun and be a part of the largest
activity in the Village. We want books that appeal to kids,
adults, cookbooks, histories, novels, and of course
lavender books! But keep the books family friendly. If you
have any questions call 344-9382. The opportunity is
first-come, first-served. Authors who live in the Village
of Los Ranchos will have a chance to sign up first. Local
authors will be the first to sign up but they must sign up
before April 1, 2008. To sign up http://nmbookcoop.com/page18/page89/page89.html

April
29, 2007 -- Horsin' Around with Great Writers! June 2, 2007
The Village of
Chama and New Mexico Book Co-op have teamed up for the 3rd
year to bring New Mexico writers to Chama and to bring
tourists and readers to the writers. The event, the 3rd
Annual Chama Book Fair and Writers' Round-up, is entitled
Horsin' Around with Great Writers! to recognize Max Evans'
participation in the Chama Book Fair.
This year's event, anticipated to be the biggest yet, will
be held in Chama the first weekend of June. The keynote and
guest author, Max Evans, will introduce his newest book
there. Published by UNM Press and entitled For the Love of
a Horse, it will be presented at the Chama Book Fair. Max
will be in Chama for book signings and photo opportunities
throughout the weekend.
In addition to the release of his latest book, he will also
be addressing the participating authors and introducing his
film, Hi-Lo Country at the weekend event. Mr. Evans will be
holding a public book signing on Saturday morning in Chama
from 9-11AM at Cookin' Books Deli and Book Store.
Over forty other New Mexico authors will participate in the
Book Fair as well as other planned special events. This
working event for the authors is the "Writers' Round-Up"
portion of the weekend. Among other planned activities,
there will be an author seminar held Saturday afternoon.
The Seminar Presenter is Max's friend and recognized New
Mexico author, Slim Randles. Slim will be presenting his
program, "How to sell to Magazines-the big secret."
The tie between Max Evans and Slim Randles goes beyond
author friendship. Slim wrote the biography of Max in 2004.
This engaging story of Max's life is entitled, Ol' Max
Evans, the First Thousand Years. Both authors will also be
signing this book.
Slim's participation in this year's event offers a double
bonus, as he will also be introducing his latest book at
the Chama Book Fair. Titled, Ol' Slim's Views from the
Porch this book is a compilation of his articles under the
same name, published by New Mexico Magazine. These witty
articles have appeared in New Mexico Magazine for a number
of years. Slim will also be autographing and selling this
book at the event.
Saturday, June 2nd is the BIG BOOK DAY! Author Book
Signings will take place at the Book Fair set for 9 A.M. to
1 P.M. at Cookin' Books. Over 40 authors of every writing
genre imaginable will be on hand to meet, chat with, and
sign their books. Book types include: New Mexico history,
novels, sci-fi, romance, mysteries, travel, cookbooks,
self-help, art, children's books and more.
The event was designed to provide New Mexico writers and
publishers with a different approach to marketing and
selling their works. Through the generosity of the Village
and several local businesses, the authors are able to
retain 100% of their book sales. This 3rd year event is
expected to be significantly bigger with the involvement of
Max Evans and the introduction of his new book.
One of the sponsoring organizations of the event, the
Village of Chama, will be hosting a special author's tea on
Friday, June 1st. They have jumped on board this unique
event for several reasons. It brings a new and refreshing
literary feel to this small mountain village. It also draws
in other visitors who are introduced to the charms of this
1880s railroad town nestled at the base of the 10,000'
Sangre de Cristo Mountains. According to Mayor Archie
Vigil, "It is a 'win-win' event for authors, visitors and
the Village of Chama."
In addition to the public Book Fair on Saturday, there will
be other free activities for participants. These events
include: free tethered Hot Air Balloon rides, an Arts and
Craft Sale, The NM Tourism Mobile Visitor Information
Center, free screening of the movie, Hi-Lo Country, Fun
& Games Van, Native American presentations by the
Jicarilla Apaches and more. Local Chama businesses will
also be offering special deals in conjunction with the Book
Fair.
Other event sponsors include: New Mexico Book Co-op, UNM
Press, New Mexico Magazine, the New Mexico Tourism
Department and Promoting Outstanding Writers, a national
writers' organization.

Writers' Round-Up, Contact Jill Lane at 505/220-4933 in

STATE LIBRARY LECTURE SERIES FEATURES LOCAL AUTHORS &
PUBLISHERS
The New Mexico
Book Co-op will be participating in the New Mexico State
Library Lecture Series this year and will be showcasing and
selling books from about 40 local authors and publishers.
The lectures will be on May 9, June 20, September 19, and
October 24. Each lecture will feature local authors and
publishers. For more information on this call 505/344-9382.
The New Mexico State Library at 1209 Camino Carlos Rey in
Santa Fe is starting a revolutionary lecture series that
will stimulate librarians and teachers and also satisfy the
general public called “Literary Passions: Southwest Authors
& Their Publishers Speak at the New Mexico State
Library.” The speaker series is an outgrowth of the
“Lasting Impressions” exhibit at the Palace of the
Governors and the State Library. The State Library
officials hope the public will come for the speakers and
stay to see the exhibit. In addition to the speakers at
each event there will be a display and sale of New Mexico
books from children’s picture books, historical novels,
nonfiction, how-to, and the speaker’s novels. All of this
is an outgrowth of the “Lasting Impressions” exhibit on New
Mexico publishers. All events are free and open to the
public.
The Lecture series starts May 9 with Judith Van Gieson and
Don Bullis talking about the formation of ABQ Press. ABQ
Press, which was started in January, may be New Mexico’s
newest publisher. Van Gieson and Bullis will talk
informally to teachers and librarians at 4pm on May 9 and
to the general public at 5pm. They will be available after
the talk to sign their newest books Wolf Path and Bulls Eye
as well as their old favorites. Van Gieson lives in the
North Valley of Albuquerque while Bullis lives in Rio
Rancho. Both are well known with large followings.
June 20 will showcase Sallie Bingham and Sunstone Press of
Santa Fe. September 19 will feature Father Thomas J. Steele
of Albuquerque and santero Dr. Charlie Carrillo of Santa Fe
with LPD Press of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. Wrapping up
this year’s lecture series on October 24 will be Joan
Logghe and La Alameda Press of La Alameda. Each will speak
casually to teachers and librarians first and talk to the
general public at 5pm. Each talk will have an assortment of
New Mexico books for attendees to look at and even buy.
Tuesday, May 9 at 5pm -- Judith Van Giesen and Don Bullis,
ABQ Press
Tuesday, June 20 at 5pm -- Sallie Bingham, Sunstone Press
Tuesday, September 19 at 5pm -- Father Thomas J. Steele and

The Lecture Series is the result of a desire by New Mexico
State Library Director Richard Akeroyd to showcase New
Mexico books, authors, and publishers. The committee for
the series included staff from the State Library and
members of the New Mexico Book Co-op, and the New Mexico
Book Association. The Lecture Series is free and open to
the public. For more information call 505/476-9790.

BOOK CLUB CONNECTION
The Albuquerque
Book Club Connection is in the process of creating a web
site listing authors and book clubs. They would like to
have a short biographical article and photo of each author
with a list of available books and where they can be found
in Albuquerque (most bookstores, one particular bookstore,
libraries or from the author). If you write in a certain
genre please mention that. This information should be
emailed to Sue Rosenberg (suerose7@comcast.net). Her
phone number is 890-9542. If you cannot email the
photo her address is 5428 Arabian Dr. NW, Albuquerque,
87120. Sue is setting up the web site. Book clubs
will also be listed on the web site and perhaps you can
assist us in finding them. We have connected with
bookstores, libraries and churches but I am sure there must
be many book clubs that you know about that we haven't
discovered. If so please give us their names and a
contact for each.

SPECIAL
WRITING COURSE SCHEDULED
The Courage to
Create
This ten week program will be offered through UNM’s
Continuing Education Department in the spring of 2006
Throughout our entire life, we are all creative, we are all
writers, we are all artists, we are all musicians. We
are perpetual students and perennial teachers. Each
one of us is both the chalk and the slate as we influence,
inspire, discourage, inform and injure every other human
being we encounter. We are altered by every sight
witnessed, sound heard, sensation experienced; even when we
refuse to admit our sensitivity, even when we are in
retreat from our destiny. As writers, as creative
people, we are driven, sometimes against our will, to
explore and record what our senses tell us and how our mind
interprets these messages.
In this class you, the student, are encouraged to question,
agree or disagree, add your thoughts, but above all, you
are encouraged to participate in life itself. The
role of this course is merely to plant some seeds, your
role is to nurture and harvest. The objective is to
give you the freedom to think and act creatively. The
truth is that, for most of us, this was lost years ago when
the joy of discovery that makes childhood so wonderful was
taken from us. This is when our sense of confidence
was beaten into submission.
Each of us possesses a self that is of great worth.
We have talents, interests and a wealth of
accomplishment. But, before we can set free the
creative self we must climb over some difficult
challenges. This course follows the book, The Courage
to Create, a Writer’s Workbook, by Hank Bruce. Cost of
textbook is $16.00. Cost of course is $95.00 The
course runs for 10 weeks, 52 at Hayes Middle School in
Albuquerque.
If you would like to have more information o this
non-credit class please contact Hank Bruce at 505-891-1355
or via e-mail at petals_pages@msn.com. To

Co-op
Featured in Article by Zelda Gatuskin
Zelda Gatuskin
has published an article about the Book Co-op and its store
at Cottonwood Mall. She notes, "The statistics have been
well publicized by now. Open a mere 40 days (Thanksgiving
through New Year’s) the New Mexico Books & More store
at Cottonwood Mall sold more than 3,400 books by local
authors and publishers, hosted more than 100 book signings
and special events, and involved nearly 200 members of New
Mexico’s literary community in a volunteer effort which
raised $5,500 for local literacy projects. The publicity is
a statistic in itself, with well over 100 mentions in the
media (including Publisher’s Weekly)—and the store is still
getting coverage even after it’s closed. By what miracle
did our eclectic and sometimes fractious collection of
“independents” come together to make book selling history?"
